GM Announces More Job Cuts?

(My Original Blog Post: http://www.latesttrendsguide.com/?p=2353)
With so many negative factors going, the announcement that 2009 will bring the close of Oshawa Truck plant and another 1000+ jobs lost in the communities of North America, what do you think is going to happen to these towns?

Oshawa, Ingersoll, places where the automakers have been the main source of employment for the vast majority of the town for years. Towns that are that blue collar workforce and that live and breathe by the functionality of that plant. No one is truly unaffected by this; the increase in job seekers is going to dry up markets and for some who will not be able to find work, they will become a strain on the already crumbling Social Assistance system. Is it really only the price of oil that's causing people to buy smaller vehicles and avoid the North American automakers for imported goods? If these automakers could come up with a fuel efficient, more ecologically friendly alternative for production, do you think it would save these jobs? Why? What will happen?
This is definitely an opinion based question, I have my own thoughts but I'm curious as to how people see this situation that feel like they are removed from it. I grew up in Oshawa and I kind of feel like this could be detrimental to the town. Let's think Ghost Town...
