Could Chief Thundercloud's 1939 portrayal of Geronimo be considered a positive or negative one?

Thundercloud's portrayal of Geronimo in the 1939 Film got him nominated for AFI's 100 Heroes and Villains. But what makes me wonder is whether his portrayal could be percieved as a positive or negative one judging by the negative stereotypes of Natives presented during this time. Would he be considered a hero or a villain?
