How does car trade-ins work?

I purchased a car in 2005. I would like to trade it in but still owe $14,000 on the car. According to Kelly Blue book My car is only worth $5,000. So I was wondering what happens if say I find a car worth 10,000 Do I end up paying $19,000. Can anyone who has traded a car in help me with this question?
