Is the economy really collapsing by Feb.2009?

So the UK is on the verge of bankruptcy im sorry to hear that but what about the US?
I thought this was the economics section filled with people who have some what knowledge of ECONOMICS not silly answers and things that don;t apply to the US, Im better off at the toddlers section.
