Will I lose unemployment benefits and possible opportunities working for the client?

I worked 2+ years in a large PC company like Dell. My contract is coming up and I'd like to pursue something permanent before it expires. I haven't gotten word when my last day is. I'm afraid to leave before my contract ends with the possibility of not being considered for permanent job with the client (Dell like company) and losing unemployment benefits if the new job doesn't work out. My family can't help me financially. What do you think? It's bugging the heck out of me.
